A new blog for autumn

Joseph Campbell says “ ….one of the great advantages of being brought up Roman Catholic is that you’re taught  to take myth seriously and to let it operate on your life and to live in terms of these mythic motifs.  (He) was  brought up in terms of the seasonal relationship to the cycle of Christ’s coming into the world.”

In my case, a lapsed Catholic, it is the motifs of the seasons that inform my storytelling; birth, life death, resurrection and rebirth. The continuous cycle of life

Great material for a storyteller to hang a story on.

So here we are, Autumn. Have you seen the colours? In case not I went for stroll around Daylesford the other day, I was looking for the colours of autumn and those little red mushrooms to photograph and along the way I played and back home I made pictures with words. An Autumn Poem…….well take a look.

Autumn seems a good time to start a new blog, (you can check out several others I have made at web addresses below), because as the weather grows cooler we are all back by the fireside. What better way to while away the long hours than tell a story or two.

But Autumn always put me in mind of my mum, June Stewart, they’re her colours and she has been the most importance influence on my storytelling career. She never ever for one moment thought storytelling was not a proper job. As a teacher and a passionate historian and literature lover June instilled in me the importance of my role.

I often tell the story of ringing my mother at a lunchtime break whilst storytelling at a very tough school in my early days, to classes of unruly teenagers.

Mum, they’re so tough I moaned close to tears.

With out skipping a beat, “Yes darling, but they’re the ones that need you the most. Get back in there”

Uggghh, Years later I’m still at it. Thanks June
